Canada’s ladies hockey team won gold at the Olympic games in Vancouver on Thursday February 25, 2010 after beating the U.S. team 2-0; the Canadian ladies then went on to celebrate in style – unfortunately the celebrations were caught on camera and broadcast to the world, who had various opinions about the matter.
In comparison to the thousands of “celebrations’ which take place in the many bars and clubs of cities and towns throughout the world on a nightly basis, the Canadian hockey team’s celebration was nothing to write home about. Is the criticism which the Canadian ladies received instigated through jealousy, prudeness or what is deemed to be “social acceptance” of such celebrations?
The Canadian hockey team who had fought long and hard (like many others) in reaching the Olympics felt the need the “let their hair down” after winning gold; the celebration took to the ice in an empty arena a couple of hours after the game ended and the ladies were caught on camera drinking champagne and beer, smoking cigars and generally goofing around.
The International Olympic Committee are now apparently investigating the “incident”; perhaps the camera man who took the photos shouldn’t have released the images to the world, in order to preserve the “image” of the Olympic games? Perhaps the ladies shouldn’t have been celebrating so publicly their Olympic win? Or is this really just much ado about nothing?
It has been suggested that if it had been the men’s team, nothing would have been said about the matter; either way, the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team win seems to have been overshadowed by much ado about…..?
