Although stock car racing is often considered a predominately male occupation, the ladies are slowly edging their way into the stock car racing circuit. Danica Patrick, probably as famous for her looks as for her participation in racing car events, makes her debut at the ARCA Race Daytona today; she is also not the only female contender. Other female ARCA Race Daytona contenders include Jennifer Jo Cobb, Alli Owens, Milka Duno and Leilani Munter. The ARCA Race Daytona is televised live from SPEEDTV.
Danica Patrick is no stranger to the racing world however; she was the first woman to win an Indy car race and has won awards for Indy Car Rookie of the Year (2005) and Indy Car Most Popular Driver (2005 -2007, 2009). However, some male competitors don’t think a woman has what it takes to compete successfully in the racing world. Richard Petty, a former NASCAR driver, was quoted as saying in the past:
“I just don’t think it’s a sport for women.”
At the time of writing this post, the end result of the ARCA Race Daytona wasn’t known – but whatever the outcome, one thing is certain. Somewhere in the future, drivers like Richard may have to change their minds…. it looks like the ladies are raising the stakes…..
