The Work of CARE in Haiti – Helping Women and Children

Nobody can fail to be moved by the huge earthquake which the island nation of Haiti on Tuesday January 12th 2010 – and the disaster which it left in its wake.  Images coming out of Haiti are heartbreaking, to say the least; as with many natural disasters, it is the women and children who often suffer the most.  Women are at risk from disease, infection and food shortages – and at risk from sexual violence, abuse and exploitation.

CARE is a humanitarian aid organization which focuses on helping women in some of the world’s poorest countries; since the Haiti disaster CARE has assisted women and children in Haiti with health and food supplies.  Before the earthquake, Haiti had one of the world’s highest maternity mortality rates; its hard to imagine what pregnant women have faced since the earthquake….
