Money is power – or so they say.  Often, celebrities get ‘bad press’ over the excessive spending celebrities make on clothes, gadgets and other material possessions.  However, some celebrities do do charity work or support charities.  Some women celebrities not only support a particular charity, they have themselves suffered some form of neglect or abuse in their past lives.  As charities depend on financial contributions to keep going, does a celebrity endorsement ‘harm’ them in any way? What do you think?

Women celebrities who have had their own personal problems in the past but now support women’s charities include:

  •  Halle Berry – suffered domestic violence abuse from a previous partner
  • Oprah Winfrey – suffered both sexual abuse and rape as a young teenager.

Women who have come from a ‘normal’ background and who now enjoy celebrity status, which they can use to promote the work of charities include:

  • Michelle Obama – as First Lady of the U.S., Michelle Obama is a considerably powerful position to ‘do good’
  • Salma Hayek – a Mexican native, Salma Hayek is passionate about supporting women who have been abused and set up her own charity to fund work.
