British actress Helena Bonham Carter has always been thought of ‘eccentric’ by some; recent relevations by Helena to the Times newspaper, however, reveal her fears on mental illness and the probability that she will suffer from it at some point in her life.
Helena Bonham Carter stars as the Red Queen in Tim Burton’s version of Alice in Wonderland which is in the typical style of many of Tim Burton’s other movies such as Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). She spoke of her fears of mental illness stating:
“I haven’t suffered yet, but I know there’s potential there. I’ve been depressed and don’t like it.”
Helena Bonham Carter is not alone in her fears; statistics and studies indicate that mental illness is more prevelant in our society than we would like to admit. Iit is even estimated that mental illness is a greater burden on society than cancer.
Both Helena Bonham Carter’s mother and grandmother suffered from mental illness which may give indication to some of Helena’s ‘whackiness’ – or perhaps its just that ‘myth’ of great British ‘eccentricity’.
