Kathryn Bigelow, 58, went head to head with ex-husband, James Cameron, to win the Best Director Oscar at the 82nd Academy Awards last night, Sunday March 7 2010; Kathryn Bigelow made history by becoming the first female director to win the Best Director Oscar. She received the award for the direction of the movie, The Hurt Locker, described as a “thriller set in Iraq”. The Hurt Locker was up against James Cameron’s more favored and much publicized Avator; The Hurt Locker was also nominated for a number of awards and eventually came away with six Oscars in various categories.
Kathryn Bigelow had this to say on the receipt of her Oscar for Best Director:
“There’s no other way to describe it – it’s the moment of a lifetime.”
Other ladies who came away with Oscars at the 82nd Academy Awards included Sandra Bullock, Best Actress (The Blind Side) and Mo’nique, Best Supporting Actress (Precious); as predicted the movie, The Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt, won the Oscar for Best Costume Design (Sandy Powell).
