Paris, France is known as one of the most romantic cities in the world; so much so that a popular “tradition” of Paris lovers is to fasten small padlocks to the railings of the Pont des Arts and symbolically throw the key into the river Seine to mark their undying love to each other. Padlocks are etched with couple’s initials to be displayed for eternity.
Or at least that used to be the case. Reuters is reporting that the “love locks” are no more. The town hall has apparently decided that it needs to “preserve the 19th century bridge’s structure.” So the padlocks had to go.
But for a city filled with romance, it is my guess that the locks will continue to appear (if only to be removed) – or that Paris lovers will find another symbolic way to pledge their eternal love in the city of romance….
