The black taffeta dress which was worn by the late Princess Diana on her first official appearance with Prince Charles was auctioned for 192,000 pounds (UK) (US$276,000) in London on Tuesday June 8, 2010.  The dress fetched nearly four times the price that it was estimated to sell for, indicating that although its now nearly 13 years since the death of Diana, interest in the late British princess has not waned.

The strapless taffeta dress was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who designed many of Princess Diana’s dresses, including her infamous wedding gown.  The dress launched Diana into a world where fashion wasn’t high on the agenda.  Both the color, a traditional color of mourning for the royal family, and the cut, which revealed an ample amount of Diana’s cleavage when she alighted from the the royal car, awakened royal circles to the future impact Diana would have on the world.

Princess Diana was just 19 years old when she wore her first “official royal gown”; from then until her death, in 1997, all eyes looked to Diana as the most fashionable member of the royal family…
