Now described as “the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history”, the BP oil spill has spread to the north western beaches of Florida, as tar balls and oil slicks were discovered on the normally pristine white sand beach of Pensacola this morning, June 4, 2010.  Although the environmental damage is beyond comprehension, as the oil continues to spread, what are the health risks for people, particularly as the main vacation season gets underway and many families head out to the beaches of America?

For women and young children, the health risks are increased; children’s growth and development can be seriously affected by exposure to toxic chemicals.  Pregnant women may unknowingly expose their unborn baby to risks such as birth defects and endocrine problems, in addition to complications in pregnancy.

So, before heading out to the beach this summer, check out the latest conditions on the beach you intend to visit – and don’t expose yourself (or your children) to unnecessary health risks….
