A couple of weeks ago, the Obama administration announced that under the Affordable Care Act and Health Care Reform, health insurance companies would no longer be able to charge a co-payment, co-insurance or a deductible for routine preventive health services on or after September 23, 2010. For women, in particular, this should come as good news. Many women skip routine preventive health screenings such as screenings for breast cancer, cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases simply because the cost is too high.
Preventive health care should save both money and lives in the long run. Preventive health care provides an opportunity to catch a potentially serious disease or illness in the early stages and offer a solution to regaining full health – before the disease has advanced beyond help.
