The September 2010 issue of the Italian version of Vogue magazine has come under criticism for controversial fashion photos reflecting the recent Gulf oil spill disaster in the United States. There has been no official statement from Vogue as to whether the photos were designed to shock or highlight a current news topic. Either way, the photos are sure to spark discussions one way or the other.
The Italian Vogue photos reflecting the Gulf oil spill disaster in the United States show a fashion model, Kristen McMenamy, in various poses on an ”oil-strewn” beach; she is wearing a black feathered outfit to reflect the birds caught up in the Gulf oil spill disaster. The photographs were taken by Steven Meisel.
The Vogue photos apparently show the work of eco-designer Kathleen Nowak Tucci of My Sister’s Art in some photos, making some believe this was an attempt to put a “positive” spin on the project. However, others believe that the photos are in “bad taste” and “lessen” the huge disaster that was caused in the Gulf by the oil spill.
I’m not sure what to think…….
