Do Men Really Suffer From the Menopause Too?

We all know that women have to go through that “certain period” in their lives called the menopause.  But do men suffer from the menopause too? And no, I don’t mean enduring their wife/girlfriend’s menopausal problems :)   I mean, an actual male menopause.  Many women would argue that men do (and its a topic that has been hotly debated for years) - but just in case you needed some evidence to back up your suspicions, ladies, here’s some recent research to support your suspicions!

According to a recent report on Science Daily, that quotes Doctor Robert Brannigan – yes, a male doctor, guys, in case you thought there was a female conspiracy here! :) – a urologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, male menopause is “a highly prevalent disorder.”  He goes on to say:

“Unfortunately, we estimate that 95 per cent of cases are undiagnosed and therefore untreated.  When ignored, symptoms can seriously disrupt one’s quality of life.”

Doctor Brannigan states that testosterone levels in men drop about one per cent each year from the late 30′s with a male’s testosterone levels down by up to fifty per cent by the age of 70 :(

Male menopause symptoms are similar to female menopausal symptoms and include mood swings, fatigue,  low sex drive and weight gain.  It is alleged that over 5 million men in the United States suffer from male menopause  (Technically, male menopause is called hygonadism, but most people refer to it as simply male menopause).

Studies have been published on male menopause in health journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine.  So, guys, give us ladies a break when we are suffering from hot flashes, fatigue and chocolate cravings – you may be going through something similar too! :)
